Shabana Omar, BSc., MA, RP (she/her)
Associate Therapist, Cherry Tree Counselling
As a licensed mental health counsellor and member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Shabana brings a diverse range of clinical experience.
Shabana has worked with individuals presenting with various concerns, including, experience of trauma, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, as well as chronic pain related mental health concerns. She has also worked extensively with women, as well as children in her role as a violence against women counsellor at Catholic Family Services of Hamilton. Shabana has lead and facilitated evidence-based parenting skills workshops based on a democratic, respectful parenting approach.
Shabana’s extensive experience working with women from all age groups, and backgrounds, has allowed her to develop a deeper understanding of the particular challenges women experience as they navigate the various roles they play in their personal and professional lives. She is sensitive to the systemic factors at play that create barriers for women and is passionate about empowering her clients in overcoming these barriers.
Shabana believes that people are experts of their own lives and have the innate capacity to create the change they want to see in their lives. She is also aware that there can be external and internal barriers that make it difficult for people to create the life they want for themselves. These beliefs translate to her therapeutic approach, where she ensures that the therapeutic work is collaborative, and client-centred and explores not only the sources of dis-empowerment but also current and potential sources of empowerment in her clients’ lives. Shabana also strives to create a safe, respectful, non-judgmental space for each of her clients so they can freely, and without fear explore their concerns, learn new skills, and re-discover the strengths, and positive qualities they already have.
