Grief and Loss

COMPASSIONATE SUPPORT FOR LIVING WITH LOSS, CHANGE, AND THE MANY WAYS GRIEF CAN BECOME PART OF OUR LIVES

Cherry Tree Counselling offers therapy and support for grief and loss in Dundas and virtually across Ontario. Grief can follow the death of someone important to us, but it can also emerge alongside illness, relationship changes, pregnancy loss, caregiving, changes in identity or ability, and other experiences that alter the life we knew or expected to have.

There is no single way that grief is supposed to look. You may feel sadness, anger, relief, guilt, numbness, longing or many things at once. Sometimes grief is overwhelming. At other times, it sits quietly in the background and appears unexpectedly. Therapy can offer a place to make room for those experiences without expecting you to move through them according to someone else's timeline.

Grief Can Take Many Forms

We often associate grief with death, but people can grieve many kinds of losses. You may be navigating:

  • The death of a family member, friend or other important person

  • Anticipatory grief when someone you love is seriously ill or dying

  • Pregnancy or perinatal loss

  • The end of a relationship, marriage or friendship

  • Changes related to cancer, chronic illness or serious illness

  • Loss of health, mobility or independence

  • Changes in fertility or reproductive experiences

  • A significant career or life transition

  • A child leaving home or changes within your family

  • Caregiving and the gradual changes that can accompany it

  • Changes in identity, community or belonging

  • The loss of a future you expected to have

Some losses are recognized and supported by the people around us. Others may be less visible or harder to explain. The significance of a loss isn't determined by whether other people understand it.
